The Karambit 101
The Karambit (Filipino Term) often called Kerambit (in Malaysia and Indonesia) or Hawk bill knife in the US as one important must haves self defense/utility knives nowadays. Originally having the double edge blade and a finger grip ring makes it the best weapon and is very very hard to disarm. To the practitioners of Kali and Silat it will be a deadly weapon of choice.
It is widely used in the birthplace of Silat, Indonesia for several centuries and has it's roots in Malaysia and the birthplace of Kali which is the Philippines, as a last resort weapon (similar to European daggers and Japanese tanto blades) and also used as a farming tool to harvest crops and for activities of daily living.
It is said to be brought by the Majapahit Empire from India which ruled South East Asia for a long time. It resembles the Claw of Hanuman (the Monkey God in the Ramayana) or sometimes called the tiger's claw. It is meant to rip through flesh than stabbing and with one arm swing it could produce 2 cuts instead of the conventional 1 cut movement with straight edged knives.
